Yup, I own one of these.
I have sent it in for service twice. It does not work again. This time it is simply the battery (which has the life seemingly, of a cell phone).
As an altimeter goes, it works OK, but once you know the height of things it sort of becomes useless data. (It is fun for hikes, but a good topo map does the job just as well).
As a ski run counter, you need to remember to turn it on each day. Got that part down? you need to remember that any significant dip in a chairlift (+- 10 ft) is considered a "run"). Need to count how many runs you are making a day? My rule is, if you are not tired, you did not ski enough.
As a thermometer... If I had perfect gloves, I might know the temperature outside... as it stands, I only know that the watch is measuring my heat loss (Yup, it says the heat coming off of my gloves is about 50 degrees today).
As a watch (I like the fact that I can wear it outside my coat... but swatch makes a watch that costs less, AND you can wear it outside AND it acts as a ski pass at some areas (like solitude)) It IS REALLY UGLY. Plus everyone asks you about it, to which you have to reply "well, I can wear it outside my coat".
As a stopwatch... I have trouble pushing the buttons with gloves on. Plus, why do I need a stopwatch?
As a statement "Look everone, I am a skier"... How about a t-shirt that says "look everyone, I am so insecure that I need to wear my hobbies as identification right here on my wrist while in public."
You want to buy someone who skis a nice gift? buy them a tuning kit, a gift certificate at a tuning center, or a day demoing skis. Save yourself the cash, this thing sucks.
OH!... by the way, I have made this mistake more than once...I owned the timex skiathalon- an equally gross piece of poop, which also went in for repair twice.
Remember those ski pole grips with the little clock in them... (I never owned them, as they were breakaway style) NOW THAT was a good idea.
