Deep in the heart of south central Kentucky is the Cumberland River. The stretch between the Wolf Creek Dam at Lake Cumberland and the Tennessee line is replete with good numbers of brown and rainbow trout. The epicenter of big-trout water on this stretch of the river is at Burkesville, Kentucky.
Trout are stocked by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife on a regular basis. Although stocked throughout the river, the area just above and below Burkesville holds the biggest concentration of trophy fish. This is due to the fact that this stretch of the river has less public access, more regular flow and hence the fish grow larger.
Just about any conventional method of trout fishing works here. Worm dunkers and corn fishermen will catch their share. As an added bonus, the worm dunkers often catch nice sized walleyes. My largest has been a 24" fish. Hardware fishermen score well with countdown rapalas, Blue Fox spinners and a host of other small minnow imitators. Fly enthusiasts can use any of the traditional methods, be they dry or streamer fishermen. In a recent trip to this area, I caught six browns between 15-17" as well as some small 'bows. This from a guy who gets up late and heads back to camp early for cocktail hour. Fish in the 5-6 pound range are not uncommon with the state record of a 20 lb brown coming from this stretch. As an added bonus, stripers from Old Hickory lake make their way into the river to feed on trout. In fact, the world line-class record striper (some 41 lbs) was caught on a streamer on this portion of the river. You can see this fish on www.kytrout.com or www.fishin.com. The guy who caught it was speechless for a good long while.
If you like to fish for trout and enjoy the possiblity of a mixed creel, the Cumberland is the place for you. You can contact the Burkesville, Kentucky Chamber of Commerce for guide info, accomodations, etc. Although I like to fish for bass, you're very likely to see me noodling along the river. It's beautiful and gives up nice fish, all without living in a crowd.
