Smooth Edge from Oxo....needs a DVD tutorial to come with purchase

Pros:Ergonomic.  Stainless.  Smooth Edge.

Cons:Wish using it was self-explanatory.

The Bottom Line: It's ergonomic - cool looking - and needs a tutorial to explain usage.  It went back to the store.

OXO often includes the term "good grips" in their product titles.  This refers us to the handles involved in whatever product it may be - the handles are usually a bit more cushioned - a bit more ergonomic - a bit more substantial than their counterparts' versions.  This is certainly the case with the Smooth Edge Can Opener.  The handles are great.  Stellar.  Easy to hold and comfortable.

I just wish I could figure out how to work the can opener.

In theory, the smooth edge can opener is a handheld can opener which, when utilized, should result on a very smooth edge on both the lid removed and the opening left behind.  No jagged metal - easy removal of the lid - essentially the removal of the most annoying part of opening a can by hand.

The turning portion is located on the side of the head and is as ergonomic as the handles - nice and large, easy to grip, turns just fine.

Cutting wheels are all stainless and, at least at the onset, extremely sharp.  the entire opener is about 8" long and all black with the exception of the aforementioned stainless head area.  Hand-washing, when necessary, is suggested per the product literature.  It is light but nothing spectacular, rather a weight I would expect and have experienced in any similar can opener.

So operations.  You may have noticed that I used the term 'in theory'.  The opener comes with minimal packaging which is great for the environment but not so great for this consumer.  I could not for the life of me figure out how to use this can opener!  I tried piering the can from the side and rotating.  No dice.  I tried somehow piercing from the top.  No dice.  I tried beating the can with the opener and saying "Abracadabra!"  Nope.

I passed the opener on to my tool-loving husband.  Him of the smug "I work with power tools" face.  Nope - he couldn't figure it out either.  Do you know we had to actually go online and find a TUTORIAL for how to use this gadget!?  After being made to feel like complete imbeciles we did figure out the can opener and the edge was, in fact, smooth.  However, minus the tutorial both of us just had to think a bit too hard before actually using this kitchen tool.

It went back to the store.  I bought a cheap version that didn't require a tutorial.  I've never felt smarter.
