gr8chef2b's Full Review: Palm Tungsten E2 Handheld
I am no computer wiz, nor am I some business mogul that needs to be in ten places at one time. So PDA was not a necessity in my life, although I have found over the last few years that it does come in handy and has lots of bonuses. My first PDA was a SONY Clie (about six years ago). Somewhere along the road it died and I never had the desire to replace it. I guess I didn't need it that bad. Perhaps I believed that there would never be another like the one I had. (sigh)
These last few years though, life has become more demanding of my time and I've been finding that it would have been nice to have a PDA for lots of reasons. But I was lazy and never looked into buying one. This past January my boss was nice enough to buy me one for my going away gift. (Nice lady you say, well let's just say after all the hours I put in for free, I deserved at least that much).
My former employer is one of those cutting edge kind of gals, always needing the new toys to keep up. I just manage to get along fine with the second rate stuff. I figure, let the people itching to burn a hole in their wallets spend all the money so I can buy the stuff after all the glitches are worked out.
I was excited. I secretly always wanted a Palm as the Clie was good, it just wasn't a "PALM". The color display is amazing. Nice sharp resolution, pictures display very well, movies (short clips) equally well although a bit slow but that's not what it was designed for. It was my new friend! I put pictures to show everyone, kept track of my appointments and contacts, I even let an artist friend doodle on the write pad (which I found to be the coolest feature).
It bothered me thought that as I opened the package, I read "90 day warranty". I just had a feeling that that wouldn't be long enough. Well, there I was 96 days after I opened the palm and started incorporating it into my daily routine. It began losing it's charge very rapidly. I was amazed at first that it would go almost a week without charging (I'm not an abuser, I use it a few times a day). When I started losing power I realized that something was wrong.
Researching I found that the Tungsten E2 is one of the only models that the user cannot replace the batteries on without sending it in to Palm. The kick to the head was when I found out that it would cost more than half of what it was worth retail .. and worse ... almost as much as it would cost to buy a new one on EBAY.
So here I am ... just bit the bullet and bought another Tungsten E2 on EBAY for $119 barely used with some extras (not a bad deal at all in retrospect). I guess I fell in love with the flashy presentation, the crisp edges, the brilliant colors and the convenience of not ever forgetting a birthday, anniversary or appointment!
One colleague of mine told me right after I bought my Clie, once you buy one, it's like a disease. You just can't shake it! I think I know what he meant. I'm going to give this E2 another chance. I'm not going to be happy if I have to buy four of them a year! I have read some negative reviews on other sites and have heard from other people that they have had similar problems with the battery life on this product. I hope I can beat the odds!!
Cheers!
Well, here we are about seven months later and it is still going strong!! Perhaps it was a fluke ... or flounder (ha ha, culinary joke). I like it a lot and battery is holding strong!
