Crater of Diamonds...who can't resist a diamond?

Written: Feb 01 '00
Pros:Fun And Educational; Plus You May Get The BIG One
Cons:It Can Be Hot During The Peak Of Summer

Why would anyone want to vacation in Arkansas? Well, there are so many reasons why. However, I'll just give you one reason...Arkansas has the famous Crater of Diamonds which is the world's only diamond site where you can actually search. It's not everyday that you are able to hunt for diamonds with a real chance of finding one. The Crater of Diamonds is a 36-acre field. The eroded surface is an ancient, gem-bearing volcanic pipe. If this sounds like your kind of vacation, plan on stopping by the visitor center to learn more about recognizing diamonds in the rough. The largest diamond found at Crater of Diamonds happened to be 40.23 carat which was also the largest found in the United States. There are other stones that can be found at the Crater of Diamonds. How about an amethyst, garnet, jasper, agate or quartz? Just remember to bring along your old comfortable clothes and digging tools.

There happens to be a campground with 60 campsites, picnic sites, laundry, hiking trail and more. If camping is not your thing, there are hotels within a few miles of the park. Admission to search is very reasonable at $4.50 per adult and children 6-12 are only $2.00
