Cons:Hot, humid summers
The Bottom Line: For a magical, historical, and beautiful vacation, don't miss Hot Springs.

Being a resident of Hot Springs, Arkansas, I can advise everyone to make an effort to visit the Spa City. This National Park is brimming over with history, fun, and a natural beauty that cannot be missed by travelers.

Families will be hard pressed to find a moment to breathe as there is an abundance of activities to enjoy. The newest attraction to the area is the rebirth of the Magic Springs theme park. Magic Springs is actually two parks in one. Taking advantage of the hot, humid summers, visitors should bring their bathing suits and take the plunge into Crystal Falls, the water park within Magic Springs. Bathers will find a river flowing around the perimeter in which to float lazily, basking in the sun. For the more active, there are water slides and a wave pool. If young children are in tow, several "kiddie pools" are available.

If you are a land lover, you may choose not to get wet and go straight for the rides instead. Several rollercoasters, a ferris wheel, and a traditional carousel are among the many attractions. Many hotel in the area carry discounted coupons for admission.

If historical sights are more your style, you may choose to indulge in a tour of the famous bath house row in downtown Hot Springs. 'Discovered' by Hernando De Soto as he learned the 'healing' properties of the hot springs from the Ouachita Indians, Hot Springs was made famous for its bath houses by famous guests of the past.

In keeping with history, one may also choose to visit the boyhood home of Former President Bill Clinton, or one of many turn-of-the-century (1800's) houses on the Historic Register.

Hot Springs Mountain Tower gives an unsurpassed view of the valley famous for its Mountain Valley Water, shipped all over the world. There are endless mountain views and trails to explore, and the beauty of the area leaves no wonder as to why the Arkansas' state motto is "The Natural State."

Lake Hamilton, Lake Catherine, and Lake Ouachita (one of the cleanest lakes in the US) are within a stones throw of any camping ground, RV Park, or hotel. Activities include swimming, parasailing, scuba diving, and boat rentals.

Murfreesboro, Arkansas is home to the nation's only natural diamond mine. For a small fee and a short drive, visitors can dig for diamonds, and keep any treasures they may find.

An explosion of restaurants being built in the area will insure that no finicky eater will go hungry! Countless national chain restaurants as well as several famous local joints are accessible from every area of the city.

The region is considerably inexpensive when compared with other areas in the US. Traditionally the South is less expensive, but be prepared to pay more for gasoline in Hot Springs than in neighboring cities. The only drawback is the humidity, and Arkansas can have sweltering summers. All in all, no tour of the nation's State Parks is complete without Al Capone's old haunt, Hot Springs.
