Lake Powell, just hearing the name makes me feel good. This is by far my most favorite place in the world. I started going to Lake Powell before I was old enough to remember. It is a vacationer paradise.
There is something here for everyone from every walk of life. For those who like all the comforts of home there are wonderful hotels just minutes from the lake. Or if you like you can rent a house boat and be at home ON the lake. There is camping for the adventurous and the meek. They have primitive camping a long the shores of the lake and then they have the actual campgrounds with showers and electric hook ups. I have never personally be fortunate enough to try the house boats but everyone that I talk to says that they are great.
The canyons surrounding Lake Powell are breath taking to say the least. Some of them tower above the lake like sky scrapers. You are very likely to see indian ruins and petroglyphs as you tour the numerous canyons and coves. You feel like you have stepped back in time as you gaze up at the dwellings that were at one time very high above the canyon floor.
For the fishermen there is nothing better than the variety of fish you can catch in these waters. There are bass, crapie, walleye, perch, bluegill, catfish and possibly more that I don't know about. Boat fishing gives you the best advantage but I have caught every fish listed above from the bank as well.
I have been to Lake Powell during every season of the year. It goes without saying that winter isn't too much fun because it does get pretty cold even there. Spring is a lot of fun for the fishing. You have to bundle up in the morning but on sunny days it gets quite nice in the afternoons. Summer and fall are the best for swimming and touring of the lake. The water is warm and you can swim and ski all you want.
I have to say that the one big draw back to Lake Powell is that because of it's size you really need a boat to truly enjoy all that it has to offer. They do rent boats but I feel that they are pretty high. We have went before without a boat and still had a really good time, but a boat would have been nice to have.
Lake Powell can be as cheap or as expensive as you want. The prices are high for things. It is a vacation spot and that isn't gonna make things cheap. If you plan ahead and take food and supplies with you, it can be a very reasonable vacation. If you want luxury and convenience plan to pay for it.
You will not be disappointed it you go there. If you go out on a boat always take a change of dry clothes, a blanket and extra food. There have been time that a sudden storm has come up and we had to wait it out in a canyon. It always better to be safe than sorry.
