| destipele's Full Review: Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument |
On a summer trip out west, I decided, as a sort of afterthought, to stop at this national park. When you go to Sunset Crater Volcano near Flagstaff, Arizona you also get to see Wupatki for free. I ended up liking Wupatki indian ruins better. And, since at this time, Mesa Verde was engulfed in the fires that roared through the west, this was the only indian ruins I was really able to see.
Sunset Crater allows visitors to walk on established paths to see the destruction of a volcano that erupted 800 years ago. The area is charred and mangled trees remain in some areas. The area takes on a reddish hue when the sun sets, hence the name.
Wupatki is the ruins of ancient indians and visitors are allowed to walk right up next to excavated building and sometimes right into the building itself. There is a community room and a ball court and a "blow hole" that blows out cool air from the ground.
There are campgrounds nearby and Flagstaff nearby for hotels. You can see some of these beautiful areas by car, but most are accessible via easy walking trails, not intended for serious hikers.
