| uroktoo's Full Review: Malibu Creek State Park |
My husband and I took a camping trip together -no kids for the first time, just the two of us. We were interested in finding a place where we could camp, that was close to Los Angeles so we could visit the La Brea Tarpits, no more than an hour from Disneyland, but close to lots of beaches. We wanted amenities such as hot showers, picnic tables, good tent sites with shade, and fire pits or barbeque areas at each campsite. We found everyting we were looking for at Malibu Creek State Park.
We found something more, too. Friendship. The campground host was kind & helpful. We couldn't have open fires, but he taught us a neat trick. Charcoal in the firepit with or without the grate was ok. Charles told us that if we purchased self-igniting charcoal, we could have a nice flame while it burned down & that would be OK because it's only charcoal. We followed his advice and were able to enjoy a "campfire", toast marshmallows, & make s'mores over the hot coals.
Another wonderful feature of this Park is it's proximity to beaches, north and south. A ten-minute drive took us to Malibu Lagoon State Beach. There's kind of a salt marsh sort of place where the creek meets the shore. We love to walk along the surf & watch the surfers & the people fishing.
The Park is close to Highway 101 and Highway 1, and was easy to find. The camping area was green & grassy and visited every morning/evening by deer. We watched herons and other birds.
We were there in early November. The weather was mild with light breezes and some early morning fog. The nights were cool, but not cold and the 5 nights we were there the skies were clear, though this is usually a time of the year for rain.
Our main purpose on this particular trip for camping at Malibu Creek was to have a jumping off point for day trips without having to stay at motels or eat in restaurants. The campground made it possible for us to have a great trip while staying within a VERY limited budget.
Whether you're looking to explore Malibu Creek State Park with it's trails, lake, meadows & movie sites or whether it's to be a "base camp" for other excursions, you'll enjoy this Park.
