Pros: It is a short walk to the relocated Bazaar del Mundo.
Cons: An example of government do-goodism run amok.
The Bottom Line: I recommend you avoid this place, especially if you used to enjoy what it was. It's just painful to even come here and see what it is now.

| bunwhisper's Full Review: Old Town San Diego State Historic Park |
I was so, so disappointed when I drove down from Los Angeles with my guests, whom I wanted to take to Old Town and the Bazaar del Mundo. I was horrified to find that it was gone--I hadnt heard that the State Park System had taken the Bazaar over and turned it into a historically-correct theme park called Plaza del Pasado that is about as much fun as attending a boring history lecture.
Gone was the excellent Casa de Bandini restaurant (and its swimming pool-sized margaritas) and the colorful shops that sold rather lovely artwork, crafts and housewares. Instead, we had shops that sold... pine boards? I couldn't really tell, the aforementioned pine shelves were mostly empty. There was a bookstore that appeared to sell some historical books. How exciting! We fled this drab place and found the relocated Bazaar del Mundo shops. Unfortunately, Casa de Bandini is no more (sob!) and I will never again sit on its beautiful sun-drenched patio and sip those wonderful margaritas.
This place is a travesty--and a pox on whoever wrecked a unique place to foist their historically-correct-but-no-fun vision on the rest of us. From what I understand, the State decided that They Know What Is Good For Us and we should be Learning History and not having a good time. So they took away all the riotous color of the Bazaar, like the Grinch stealing Christmas, and replaced it with beige. The ground, the chairs, the walls, it's all beige. I bet the food is beige too, but I didn't stay around to see. I read that the chairs were historically correct, but they had to be replaced because 21st century behinds didn't feel too comfy in them.
