Some changes along the way (Reply to this comment)

Please note that Redwood Nat'l Park is north of Eureka to Crescent City, and the park in the epinion is State, not National.
In the time that this was written a couple of the popular big trees have fallen in winter storms. Some of the parks are being closed (e.g. Prairie Creek) for budget reasons. 101 has been partially rerouted at Confusion Hill attraction with a bridge over the river (it's now more of a driveway to it, which makes access easier, actually) due to land instability that has caused part of it to end up in the river. CalTrans is embroiled in a hotly contested battle in a pinced section of road in Richardson Grove to widen the highway for STAA compliance.
With considerable ongoing state budget issues be aware that road maintenance in the parks is lacking. Some areas of the Avenue, such as around South Fork confluence of the rivers the road is a mess and one would be wise to exercise caution and slow down. Also, the weather isn't as foggy all day as it used to be in decades past, which for some seems acceptable but is causing noticeable harm to the trees.
The Benbow Inn is undergoing remodelling. The old lake and dam is being removed for environmental and cost saving reasons. The Gingerbread Mansion in Ferndale is no longer an Inn. It has been turned into a private residence. It is in foreclosure the last I heard so it's future is uncertain.
As always, in Fall through Spring, check road conditions before you visit! Numerous large slides have occurred along 101 and several of the minor roads in the last couple years, most notably a large slide on 101 at Dean Creek near Garberville that covered and damaged all lanes and cut off access from the south for a week.
