| phil.marquard's Full Review: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument |
I stopped at Gunnison Canyon a couple of years back for what I had intended to be a one day layover on our way further West. What we found at Gunnison was so delightful that we stayed for four days. We wold have stayed longer but for time constraints.
The scenery - spectacular, the solitude welcome and much needed. Apart from an occasional visit by the few other campers on the south rim, there were no human interruptions although we had daily morning visits by the local deer population.
There are several trails one can take throughout the park. Some are quite steep and a bit spooky if you have fear of heights, others are quite easy for anyone in reasonable good condition. Keep in mind you are at over 8500 feet so the air is a bit thin.
The overlooks are spectacular for those wanting to spend just a couple hours in the park. Picnic areas are nicely situated too.
