Rocky Mountain National is located above Estes Park Colorado. The park is 415.2 square miles of forest, wilderness and wildlife. Possibly one of the most beautiful National Parks in the United States. It is also home to one of the highest roads in the nation, Trail Ridge Road, which rises to 12,183. Of course, I am biased having grown up near the park.
Biking, fishing, hiking and camping are the primary activities in the park. The park has many trails suitable for anything from casual day trips to more serious overnight backpacking adventures. There are also campgrounds available for those who like to camp in a more secure area. It is advised to make reservations for spaces in these campgrounds up to a year in advance.
Fishing is abundant in the park with over 100 lakes to available. Be sure to obtain a fishing permit before attempting to fish in anywhere in the Park. A favorite catch is the Rainbow trout.
There is also an abundance of wildlife in the park. Most common sightings include elk and bighorn sheep. I once took visitors from Ohio to the park and we found a heard of elk grazing. I stayed back by the car and my friends went down to where there were other people taking pictures of the elk. When the elk finished grazing, they took off in a line and ran right past me. It was a really rare experience and one you could only find in the Rockies.
My most important piece of advice is to bring clothing for any weather situation. The weather can change from sunny and warm to freezing rain or snow in 10 minutes. Yes, even snow in the middle of summer. I have been on many hikes through the park and have seen visitors huddled under trees trying to keep warm because of a sudden change in the weather. Take a day pack with water, food, suntan lotion and some sort of water repellent jacket, preferably Gortex. Hypothermia is a very real threat in the Rockies and can come on suddenly if you are not prepared.
Rocky Mountain National Park is a great place for a family vacation or for a wilderness adventure. The Park is one of America’s great playgrounds. It is tuly a vacation destination that should not be passed by. For more information on the park, you can visit the Park’s unofficial website at: http://www.coloradoguide.com/rmnp/frame1.htm.
