Coronado National forest is only about 10 miles south
of a town called Sierra Vista. It is a very nice forest area
located in many of the valleys the line the Huachuca Mountains. There is a great number of birds to see, especially hummingbirds, as Sierra Vista is the Hummingbird capital of the country. The amount of hummingbirds in and around this area is so great that the local high school has followed suit with the Cochise Collage and began local classes in the mountains specifically based on the hummers.
The forest itself is honestly a rare for this type of desert region and although the forest is in a desert, it is high in elevation, providing for many different species of animals and plants. This includes pine trees toward the top of the range. The Coronado Park visitors center is very nice nature wise. They offer many different guided tours and also offer a very wide selection of desert survival and animal life books and guides. Also there is a cave about .8 miles from the visitors center up a medium difficulty trail.
This cave is small but actually really neat as usually the crowd is small so often you are the only persons there. As well as all of this the Coronado National Forest is in a great place since it is very near the historic town of Bisbee AND Tombstone! I would highly recommend to anyone coming to the southern area of Arizona that they stop by and check out the birds and the cave at Coronado National Forrest
