| johnsy1's Full Review: Daniel Boone National Forest |
The Daniel Boone National Forest is a great place to get away from it all and enjoy some quite time. The DBNF is located in eastern Kentucky and includes over 700,000 acres of land. There are many parks and campgrounds located in the Daniel Boone as well as two large lakes, Laurel River Lake and Cave Run Lake. However, be prepared to drive into some pretty remote areas on unpaved roads to some of these places.
There are many activities to enjoy in the forest such as many miles of hiking, horseback riding, and mountain bike trails. There is the 269 mile long Sheltowee Trace Recreation Trail the extends the length of the DBNF. If you follow this trail there is an abundance of scenery including crystal clear mountain streams and whitewater rivers. Also you will encounter a variety of wildlife to keep you company along the way.
Other activities you might enjoy in the forest are rock climbing, especially at the Red River Gorge area. The Laurel River Lake Beach is a favorite location for swimming and best of all admission to the beach is free. If you enjoy hunting the Mill Creek Wildlife Management Area located in the Daniel Boone is a great place for deer and wild turkey hunting. There are too many sites available for camping and pic-niking to even start to mention them all here.
It is a great place for kids to connect with nature. If you do plan on taking children I would recommend taking extreme care and being very careful especially on hiking trails and scenic overlooks. The Daniel Boone is rough terrain with many cliffs and steep embankments. This terrain also makes a good home for poisonous snakes.
The best months to visit are May, September, and October. Many campgrounds and picnic areas are closed during the winter months and during the hot and humid summer months in Kentucky the insects are quite overbearing.
This is just a small sample of the places and things to do in the Daniel Boone National Forest. This forest is "big as the all outdoors" so it would be impossible to mention all of the parks, trails, and recreation opportunities available in this review. For more information as well as maps, rules and regulations, safety information, and a complete listing of recreational opportunities please visit the official website of the Daniel Boone National Forest at:
