Fort Frederica is located on the north end of St. Simons Island, in close proximity to Christ Church. It is the first English settlement in Georgia established by James Oglethorpe. The park is set up as an lifelike re-creation of the old colonial town that stood there over 200 years ago. There are several ruins of old buildings. You can walk inside some of them and walk around others. Tools and pottery shards are on display at the places they were discovered in glass and wooden cases. There are also written accounts of history on the signs at the locations with some that you can push a button and listen to some guy talk about the history. There are picnic tables to eat at among the huge water oaks all over the place. There is a great view of the marsh side of the island facing Brunswick. It is really hot, humid, and bug infested in the summer. The gnats are terrible and do not stay out of your face for a second. The best time to visit would not be in the summer, but the spring or fall.
