Notice the list of recommended attractions at the end of this review.
I am very picky when I choose temporary quarters. There are certain things that I mandate as essentials before I will consider laying my head on their pillows and closing my eye for a nights rest away from home. When I travel I seek a place that is clean. comfortable, quiet, and accommodating. Some places go far beyond the norm. My theory on paying for the highest dollar temporary resident is formed based on opinion built by experience. Let's face it when you go somewhere in a city on vacation, or for a convention you are not there to camp out in your motel or hotel room. Most of the time spent there your eyes will be closed and your consciousness of your surroundings is nonexistent. Although this is true, the period of time you are awake you want to be in a clean environment that is climate controlled and rodent free.
However, when you are vacationing you are after a change in lifestyle. Vacations are important for everyone as it allows you to have the essential break in the rut that your job traps you in. On vacations you wish to be pampered, sometimes to the extreme limits. Let's face it, if your wife is like mine she deserves to be pampered a lot more than she gets. Probability has it that you too aew in need of a little pampering yourself. My wife, like most wives, spends far more time doing the things that keep the household running like a well oiled machine than do I. Personally, I don't know what I would do if I didn't have her to keep things going.
The Stone Mountain Inn is a great place to get away for a second honeymoon. While this true, we had our young son and daughter along with us. The park has a lot to offer everyone while staying there, boat rides, hiking, petting zoo, biking, the Stone Mountain Train, the largest granite rock in the South. The Stone Mountain Inn's front door opens to a beautiful view of the three Southern Generals carved into the side of the Stone Mountain.
That said, we decided to take a jaunt over to Atlanta for a couple of days where she wanted to stay at Stone Mountain Inn. When I heard the expense of the room I objected. As stated, I knew that most of our time would not be spent in the room, but rather in the park. She wanted it, she deserved a break, and she got it (like a smart husband I yielded to her desires). It has been a few years since we have been and at the time my income was not what it is today. Making the commitment for the high dollar stay was a major decision at the time.
The room was spacious with rugs covering the beautiful hard wood floors. The rugs made me take my shoes off just to be able to feel the pile run through my toes. It was so soft! A baby's bottom has nothing on this rug. In one corner, next to a sliding patio door, there was a fireplace that would be most romantic in the colder months. When we were there it was far too warm to build a fire, but the fireplace just being there added atmosphere and made the room seem all that more comfortable. There was a divan, three chairs and two king size beds in the room. Notice I said "divan" and not a couch, the difference being a couch you'd find in a motel, while this divan would be located in your nicer homes ( it would look great in mine). The furniture was not the cheap stuff one is used to finding in most motels. It made you want to forget about taking home a souvenir towel, soap, lotion, or shampoo, and just back up the vehicle and load up the furniture instead. And the towels! The towels were full length bath towels that were almost as soft as the rugs.
Although I would not spend my millions on staying in such rooms on a routine basis, I did enjoy it and would recommend everyone staying there, or some place like it from time to time.
When you go, expect to pay for entrance into the Park itself even if you staying at the Inn. They charge a $7.00 per vehicle just to enter the Park. When you check in you are given a parking sticker that allows you to come and go from the park at will without having to stop and pay to return each time. Entrance to the Park is free if you afoot, but they know you are unlikely to walk in.
The thing not to miss!
The Park has a laser light show that is great to watch, call the toll free number I provided for schedule dates and times. The show can be seen all over the Stone Mountain area as it is displayed on the side of the mountain. The show began at 10:00 p.m. and is a must see, even if you view it from outside of the Park. In the Park you are invited at no extra charge to attend and you get the full monte of laser show that is coordinated with pop music and historical storyline.
If you can't stay at the Inn due to higher cost, but wish to go to the Stone Mountain Laser Show while staying in more economical accommodations, please check out my review of the Comfort Inn in Marrieta, Georgia. The Comfort Inn is close to the ‘Loop' and you can access all the tourist attractions with little trouble.
Whichever you decide on, I am certain you will enjoy your stay.
TIP: It is a good idea to purchase a map of Atlanta for if you aren't familiar with the streets you will certainly go in circles.

Avoid the Interstates during rush hour traffic. I have traveled as slow a 2000 yards in an hour due to the traffic jams. One positive thing is that gas is a lot cheaper than most cities. I figure they realize you are going to use a lot of it sitting still. Think before you get in the mess. Spend a little more time where you are and you will be a lot more comfortable!
