Ledges State park is located in Central Iowa, within 30 minutes of the major population areas of Des Moines and Ames. The land in the park lines the east bank of the Des Moines river as it travels to the south.
Human activity in the area has been dated to at least 4,000 years ago. Even then the beauty of the sandstone 'ledges', and the heavily-wooded river valley must have been apparent. The park features 13 miles plus of maintained hiking trails, many rising and falling on the steep slopes of the river valley. A good aerobic exercise for any age of visitor. There is a fully accessible interpretative trail for the 'challenged' visitor.
Camping, including electric hookup, non-electrical and hike-in is available within the park. Modern facilities (showers, toilets, dump station) are available in the main campground area.
Despite being close to urban areas, the park seldom seems crowded and other visitors are friendly and non-intrusive.
