| donnab1970's Full Review: Brown County State Park |
If you are looking for a place that is peaceful, serene, and where you can spend literally hours upon hours just relaxing with your family...this is the place!
The first time we drove through the covered bridge at the entrance of Brown County State Park, I knew I was in for a pleasant day!
We first just took a ride through the park in our vehicle. The trees were beautiful and green. The land ranges from being flat to being high in the hills - or as the boys said "We're in the mountains!" Scenic views from high atop the hills showed lush tree filled valleys that would take your breath away.
We then decided to stop and picnic at one of the two lakes in the park. We sat under the trees that provided shade in the summertime and enjoyed ourselves listening to the creek that was gently running nearby. After lunch, we decided to take the hike around the lake, it was about a mile or so. We saw fish, turtles, and tadpoles coming to the edge of the water as we walked. We even saw a snake! Several people were fishing in different spots around the lake.
We have also camped at the camping ground (tent camping). This was fun also. We got to see raccoons coming out at night. The restroom facilities were very clean. We were across the street from rustic facilities and within walking distance of the shower & newer restroom facilities. We also had the option of electric or non-electric campsite. We also enjoyed walking down to the nature center, where at that particular time, the Conservation Officers had a black snake out talking about it and letting children touch it.
The nature center houses several kinds of snakes, as well as a hive that is encased in glass where you can watch the bees make honey, turtles, and a viewing area to watch birds feed. They also offer various facts about the animals in Indiana and different quizzes children can take. The nature center offers a water fountain and restrooms as well.
We also had the pleasure of staying in one of their rustic cabins. It housed two beds and a restroom that had a sink, toilet, and shower. No phone in the room (how nice!!) but a tv!! It was nice - although the black ants were pretty bad at the time. The cabin we stayed in was located behind the lodge at the hotel (which is absolutely beautiful!).
Other items of interest at the park include: horse camping and riding trails, hiking trails, guided horseback riding, RV camping, a pool, tennis and basketball courts.
This is a definite must see when you visit Nashville, Indiana!!
