| coldsteel7's Full Review: Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore |
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is located in Northwest Indiana, and lies primarily in Porter and LaPorte Counties. The Dunes are located on Lake Michigan.
The National Lakeshore offers a variety of activities such as camping, picnic areas and hiking. The area is well maintained. The National Lakeshore offers a variety of scenery, including dunes, beaches and wooded areas.
The wooded areas offer a variety of wildlife, which is surprising based on the parks close proximity to Gary, Indiana. There is no hunting, so the deer population has gotten large. In fact, they have had to hire a contracter to "thin out" the deer population.
I would recommend any outdoor activities like biking, hiking, walking or enjoying the picnic areas. However, I would NOT recommend swimming. It may just be me, but I would not swim so close to the Gary Steel Mills, that have been dumping pollution into Lake Michigan, just a few miles down the coast. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a tree-hugger. However, Lake County is the next county west of the park, and has received superfund money to clean the pollution. The Calumet River could not be cleaned, because of the toxic sludge at the bottom. The waterfowl is just beginning to return to the area.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore offers a variety of activities, and I would strongly recommend the park for a relaxing day and pleasant scenery. For the brave of heart, SURFS UP!
