| Adanna's Full Review: Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park |
Blue Licks Battlefield State Park is a great place, full of history and natural beauty. The park is located 48 miles northeast of Lexington on US 68. It is most renowned as the last battle of the Revolutionary War in Kentucky. In 1782, Indians and British soldiers ambushed the Kentucky soldiers near the Licking River. The Kentucky troops were greatly outnumbered and suffered great losses. Every August the park has a reenactment of the battle. There is a monument standing near the entrance of the park, paying tribute to the many fallen soldiers in the Battle of Blue Licks.
Besides war history, the park is known for its salt springs which one attracted prehistoric mammoths. In the 19th century, the mineral springs were a popular health resort. They also bottled the water and sold it, the label reading "Genuine Blue Lick - Queen of Health Waters. Directions: for constipation drink one or two glasses before breakfast. For disorders of the Stomach, Liver, and Kidneys, use freely during the day and you will be surprised at the result. Blue Lick Springs Co. Blue Lick Springs, Kentucky."
There is the Pioneer museum located in the park. There is a small fee to enter the museum, but it is well worth it. There is a short video presentation about the Revolutionary War battle that took place at Blue Licks, Indian and Kentucky pioneer artifacts, a gift shop, and mastodon bones. The museum and gift shop are only open April 1 through October 31.
Cottages and camping are available if you want to stay overnight (or a few days!). The cottages, located on the Licking River, provide the comforts of home. Reservations are required for the cottages. If you prefer to "rough it", there are 51 campsites with utility hook-ups. A central service building provides showers and rest rooms. Advance reservations are not needed for the campground.
