Can't wait to go back to Kodiak
Written: Feb 14 '01
I had the pleasure of visiting Kodiak Island last summer courtesy of the US government. During our off time I was in a natural wilderness paradise.
We were there during the fishing season (around August) and the Salmon were running wild. I believe I caught my legal limit every day I fished (and no more than that I swear!). Upon returning home, we had Salmon for a couple months.
The wild life and scenery are breath taking. There is a mountain right across the street from the end of the runway of the Kodiak US Coast Guard station. There is a place to pull off the road and if you're up to it, take an exhilarating hike up the 2500 feet of rock. This hike starts out relatively easy and the path is well worn for the entire route. As you near the half way point, it steepens and becomes more challenging. It became a race every other day for us. The record time was 1 hour (my friend was really worn out). At the top you can see the town, the base, the bay and the vast landscape that makes up the island.
There are other great places to hike and fish all over the island and all the equipment you could need can be obtained in town as well as a fishing license ($7 when I was last there).
I town there are some small shops and a few local type restaurants but no good bars or clubs.
