I have been to Grand Isle several times and believe it to be all right but there are better beaches available. Port Fourchon, also off of La. 1 offers all the features of Grand Isle for free. The only difference is that Grand Isle has a few historic signs, which can be viewed for free. Port Fourchon is not on the island itself but once one is on the beach one can not tell the two apart.
If one is involved with the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts and contacts the Coast Guard ahead of time, then one can sleep on the Coast Guard base in barracks.
The Louisiana beaches are not as clean in general as the beaches in Mississippi, but there is no camping on the Mississippi beaches themselves. Florida beaches, with the ocean, are even prettier. If one is already in Louisiana and desperately wants to sleep on the beach, then forget Grand Isle and go to Port Fourchon.
On Louisiana beaches, we have floundering, coast fishing, crabbing, and yes one can swim there too. If one has never been to a beach, be prepared to be able to see as far out as the eye will allow. Sights to be seen include dolphins and shrimp boats in Louisiana.
