| teamsporttrac's Full Review: Thousand Hills State Park |
I attended Truman State University in Kirksville, MO. During my time in Kirksville, Thousand Hills State Park eventually became my "second home." I frequented the park to study, be with friends, and several times for a quiet night of camping away from the campus chaos.
The park has a lot to offer. They rent-out several different types of boats (skiing, fishing, pontoon, canoes, paddle boats) and a nice restaurant. The restaurant is a bit expensive/semi-formal for a weekend camper, but they have an awesome breakfast buffet. The restaurant is often visited by people from the town of Kirksville who aren't necessarily camping.
There is a nice biking/hiking trail that goes through the woods, up hills, around the lake and ends up by the dam. I'm not sure how long it is, but you can spend a few hours walking it.
On the Park's premises are native Petroglyphs. These are ancient Indian carvings in stone. They have been preserved and are housed inside a gazebo with visual guides to aid in interpreting them.
A few times a month the Missouri Department of Conservation puts on educational programs in the Park's outdoor Amphitheater. Oh, and there's a sand swimming beach too (you must pay for admission, I'm unsure of the costs).
Obviously, the park has a lot to offer. It is nice being so close to Kirksville in case you should ever need anything. But there are also 2 Colleges in this town. Students frequent the park, but stay mainly near the lake and not so much on the campgrounds. Occasionally however, there may be a loud bunch.
Whitetail Deer are plentiful in the park (Raccoons also). Deer can be seen all throughout the park year-round. I actually had a 6-point buck sneak up about 20 yards from me while doing my homework at a picnic table once!
