Pros: a beautiful place to spend your vacation
Cons: mosquitoes! But that's in any outside area in the south...
The Bottom Line: Clarko State Park is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon or a relaxed week this summer.

| RBenson1's Full Review: Clarkco State Park |
Most of my childhood summers were spent at Clarko State Park. My best friend lived several hundred miles away but her grandparents were my neighbors. In the summer she would come to stay with them and we were inseperable. We would talk her grandfather into taking his camper to Clarko for weeks at a time so we could make the most of our summer.
My summers at Clarko were spent like most kids spent their summers back then. We would spend our days swimming, walking in the woods, playing with the other kids at the campground, catching frogs, and just hanging out having fun. And things haven't changed much at Clarko in those 25 years. The biggest attraction is still the lake. There is a swimming area with a lifeguard, plus plenty of non-swimming areas to just wade and chase tadpoles. Paddle boats are available for rental, and they always make for a day of fun. Fishing is allowed... and seems pretty good from the others I have watched.
There are a couple of well-maintained playgrounds for the kids to spend time on. Well marked paths make family hiking easy and safe. And a wooded golf-like game course has been set up. You get the equipment to play at the office and take off through the wooded course hitting the ball and chasing it. I have never played but it looks fun.
Clarko is a great place for family reunions and get-togethers. There is a large room available to rent, overlooking the water. We had my uncle's 75th birthday party there this winter and it was a success. We built a roaring fire in the fireplace at one end of the room and set up the tables facing the lake so we could watch the rain on the water. It was quite comfortable. And for better weather there are several pavillions available for outside parties.
The campgrounds are pretty typical of state parks now. There is no primative camping out in the woods. All of the campsites are clearly marked and have trash cans, water, and electricity. They are beautifully shaded and there are bath houses with laundry facilities within easy walking distance of all the campsites. There is a mixture of tents, campers, and RV's in the same areas. When you go to Clarko to camp, you just go pick out a campsite andset up. The ranger comes around late in the day to collect camping fees. My only complaint is that there is nowhere to camp without being set up with everyone else. We tend to like to be alone in the woods when we camp. But this isn't a huge problem.
There are also cabins for rent on the opposite side of the lake from the campgrounds. The cabins are small but nice. I have only stayed in these once but enjoyed my stay.
I would highly recommend Clarko State Park for anyone near Meridian or Quitman, MS looking for a fun place to spend a relaxed week or a sunny afternoon this summer.
