Pros:Some of the best scenery you'll ever see; great hikes.
Cons:Accommodations are very inconsistent; service is spotty in several lodges.
The Bottom Line: Glacier National Park is highly recommended, the scenery is without compare and the hiking is terrific. Lodging is spotty, choose carefully.

Glacier National Park is a true jewel. It is well worth a visit and early September is ideal - the crowds have thinned out and the weather is often sunny with highs only in the 70's. Accommodations are limited and quality uneven. Our experience was based on an early September visit in 2007; many of the lodges were ready to close, short-staffed and some of the remaining staff seemed indifferent and ready to go back to school.

Lake McDonald Lodge - cabin

Very small, cell-like cabin. Service was poor - staff was indifferent. We heard from others that rooms in the main lodge were nice - so room choice may matter a lot here. We also hear that the nearby Village Lodge in West Glacier was nice.

Rising Sun Motor Lodge

Room was OK, staff was very nice. Restaurant was terrible - food was flat out bad and loud rock music played through our entire meal. It is the kind of place that serves no name condiments - never a good sign.

Waterton Glacier Inn Suites

Nice but expensive. Waterton itself is terrific - bring your passport and take an extra day to visit this spectacular corner of the park - great wildlife viewing near downtown and on the many park trails.

Many Glacier Hotel

Very nice - rustic, but beautiful. Views across the lake into the mountains are awesome. Staff was helpful and seemed glad to be there and glad to see us. Iceberg Lake and Grinnell Glacier hikes are longer but wonderful.

Travelers Rest - Two Medicine area.

Best place we stayed on this trip. Cabins are new, immaculate and the owners very accommodating. Serrano's Mexican restaurant in nearby East Glacier was excellent. They lost power just as we entered but somehow managed to serve everyone and the food was wonderful.

Summit Station Lodge - Marias Pass Roosevelt highway.

Writing this review from Summit Station Lodge - beautiful place, nice cabin but they just fired the whole staff or they deserted the place (we've heard both versions). The lodge restaurant is closed and the cabin is not that clean. We just negotiated half price because of the issues. Should be OK but not what we expected. You might want to double check before you book.
