| RiverNH's Full Review: Mount Washington State Park |
I grew up in the shadow of Mt. Washington, and although I don't live near it anymore, I always have a quick intake of breath when I view its summit.
Its the tallest mountain in New England, and the second tallest east of the Mississippi River. Its a mountain that is used year round for a variety of purposes, and its a mountain to respect. Its among the most deadly mountains in the world. Not a year passes without someone dying on its slopes.
There is no finer hiking anywhere. The Appalachian Mountain club, near Gorham NH is a center where hikers can register trips and depart for either the summit, or Tuckermans Ravine. Tuckermans is fine spring skiing. In late April and May, hikers carry their skis up there for the thrill of skiing. I personally wouldn't haul skis that far, but I have gone up to watch others race down the slopes as a spectator. Anyone hiking this mountain needs to be prepared. The summit is much colder than the base, and the weather can change very quickly. The hike is very challenging and only the fit should attempt it.
For the less adventuresome, there are other routes to the summit. In the summer the auto road operates, and you can either drive your own car to the summit or relax on the mountain stage. Its cheaper to take your own car, but the steep, narrow slopes make driving a challenge, and its harder to enjoy the incredible views while you are driving. If you want to sit back and relax, I recommend taking the stage up to the summit.
On the other side of the mountain there is a cog railway up to the summit. The tickets are a little on the expensive side, but the ride is full of history, and the hundred year old railway is fascinating.
The area has a lot of other things to attract visitors, but no one should miss Mount Washington.
