Do you like old stuff? I mean really old stuff? Perhaps a visit to the area just east of Fallon (on US Highway 50) is for you!
Perhaps you've read about the "Spirit Cave Man", a mummy found nearby in the 1940's. Testing in the mid 90's revealed this mummy to be 9,415 years old, which not only makes him one of the oldest in this hemisphere, but indeed, one of the oldest mummies recovered anywhere.
Ok, ok, so the mummy isn't there (he's now in a lab), but the history of the area is! Look around on the rocks and what do you see? Petroglyphs...ancient artwork (graffiti?), some over 5,000 years old. This is really some amazing stuff. I couldn't help but be amazed. Just an image on a rock? Imagine, here you are looking at something that another human being created tens of centuries before your time. It has survived the harsh desert conditions and continues to communicate its message. Amazing!
Although there are historical markers along the trail, chances are you'll want to talk to someone or (if you're lucky) find a guide to show you around. Check with the Churchill County Museum in Fallon (775) 885-6000 for more info.
This is a truly unique area full of pre-history and is well worth the visit.
