Known as "The Grand Canyon of the East", Letchworth State Park is one of NY State's lesser known destinations. The Genessee river runs through the park and there are 3 waterfalls. It is truly a beautiful place to visit if you are on your way to Niagara Falls or near the Finger Lake region. I am always surprised that so few people have heard of it. The park is about an hour south of Rochester or Buffalo off of Route 390. I grew up about 5 minutes from Letchworth and I always make sure to visit when I go back and see my family.
The best time to visit is during the Fall when the leaves are at their peak. On Columbus day weekend, there is a huge Arts Festival-- but beware because that is the busiest time of the year for the park.
There are many things to do and see. You can stay at the Glen Iris Inn (former home of William Pryor Letchworth and now a restaurant and Inn), rent a cabin, or camp in the campground. There are also very nice Bed & Breakfast Inns in the towns surrounding the park. During different times of the year, you can go up in a hot air balloon over the park and they also have white water rafting. Price per vehicle to enter is $5 for an all day pass.
If you love to hike or love nature, you will love this park!
If you want a little more adventure, enter the park from Portageville and hike along the canyon where there are no man made barriers.
