This is a hidden treasure in Western New York State. Located southeast of Rochester, and southwest of Buffalo, some call it the Grande Canyon of the East.
Here you will find a beautiful landscaped park, with stone fences, and walkways. There are three waterfalls over a deep gorge, the stone paths have steps to take you to the top of the falls or down, depending on which direction you walk. There is also a railroad tressle, in which you can hike up to and walk across, as long as you are not afraid of heights. Stop and take a picture of the rainbow that can be seen in the middle falls, and cool down from the mist hitting your face.
In the summer the park is a mecca for locals as well as tourist, there are many picnic areas, campgrounds and cabins. On the North end of the park is an Olympic size swimming pool, and centrally located another smaller pool, near the campgrounds. If you like to hike, then you will enjoy the many trails through out the park, many of which will take you along the lower gorge and up close to the Genessee River.
I personally feel that the best season to visit the park is Fall, the maple trees are in full color, and make such a picturesque backdrop for the waterfalls. I have taken many pictures there that time of year, and they are always my favorites. But if you are a person who does not mind the snowy weather, than I also highly suggest a visit in the midst of winter. There is nothing like it that I have found else where, the gorge is ice covered, you can visit the lower falls, and walk out to the stone bridge that crosses the River, or shall I say navigate your way to it. The utmost in caution is needed if you visit during the winter months, but it is spectacular. There are also cross country skiing trails on the east side of the park.
The park also hosts a wonderful dining experience in the Glen Iris Inn, which overlooks the wonderful scenery. There is a goldfish pond located outside of the Inn and also a small museum.
If you are looking for a private quiet getaway for a honeymoon, this is the place for you. The entire drive through the park takes a little over forty minutes, and along the way you will see deer, rabbits and other wildlife. If you choose to pull off to the side of the road for a secluded picnic, there are areas for that also.
So much to see and do, I have been to this park many, many times. I must say I miss being able to see it as often as I did when I lived in New York State.
