| wiseokc's Full Review: Lake Texoma State Park |
Some of my fondest childhood memories occured at Lake Texoma. My grandmother had a house at Lake Texoma and every summer I would stay with her to enjoy the lake.
Having lived in Oklahoma most of my life I have visited many of our lakes. In my opinion Lake Texoma tops them all. The beaches are sandy (my grandmother lived at what is called Sandy Beach), the water is clean, and the fish are in abundance. The people that live in the area are some of the friendliest in the state.
Lake Texhoma gets it's name because both Texas and Oklahoma share the lake, hence the name Texhoma. The Oklahoma side is the largest and most visited.
Great news for fisherman, on my fishing trips at Lake Texhoma (which are countless) I have never came home without catching at least 20 fish in a minimum of 3 hours. Striper and bass are in abundance and I have even caught a rainbow trout (once). Fishing is at it's best by boat although the banks offer adequate fishing opportunities. My fishing buddy, since I was a young child, has been an older gentleman named Mr. Stemen and he sure knows where the fish are biting. If you see him out and about tell him hi.
Swimming is another fun recreation that can be enjoyed at Lake Texhoma. I must caution to wear shoes due to many partiers throw glass bottles in the lake and also you run the chance of getting snagged by a lost fishing hook. Also, watch the turtles, they sometimes like to wander near swimmers.
Three things that I must caution visitors of:
Rattlesnakes, they are out and about. They blend in with the sandy beaches and also the rocks and leaves. I have heard of people stepping on them without ever seeing what was underfoot. They also like to hang around hollow logs.
Quicksand can be a danger on some beaches. I was warned of this but as a child (who thought she knew everything) I got stuck in quicksand at Sandy Beach. Luckily my family was only a few feet away and were able to free me very quickly.
Storms, Oklahoma is well known for our severe weather (tornadoes and strong winds). I would recommend having a battery powered television available during your vacation. Please note that when the weatherman tells everyone to leave the lake, they mean business. Take shelter immediately at the safest possible place (tents and vehicles are not sufficient). I had some friends recently out at the lake during the storm. They lost all their belongings and were lucky to survive with no injuries (unlike many other campers who did not heed the advance warning). They were stuck out in 80mph winds, hard rain, and hail.
Aside from the few precautions that must be taken at Lake Texhoma, it is a great place to visit. I recommend atleast a 3 day stay but 7 would be even better. Sandy Beach and Solider Creek are very popular for it's swimming opportunities and both also have a boat dock.
Have fun and remember to tell my fishing buddy, "hi". He might even take you on the adventure of your life.
