Roman Nose State Park:
Whatever made me think I should go back there after a terrible first visit I do not know... not only had nothing improved it was worse. Roman Nose State Park is located between Okeene and Watonga Oklahoma. After a previous trip several years ago with my family. I had been told that they had vastly improved there park, or rather the state has vastly improved the park. So I thought why not I like hiking and back backing why not try tent camping again.
So I packed my bags and headed off the hundred or so miles to the park. I arrived there around 4 PM. CST. Drove through the gate only to be greeted by a hundred or so RV's in what seemed to be only 1,000 square feet. So I drove off to another section of the park where I might be able to pitch a tent. I pulled up my car to the camp attendant I asked how much it was. he said "Well, youngster if this here, section wasn't closed it would be 29$ for basic camping without water and electric". I was floored by his manner and attitude so I asked him where a section might be open. And he gave me directions to yet another section of a park.
Got there. and was met by what looked like to be a young high school student. I asked her where I could set up my tent. She had a little bit a better way of talking to people then other and with a typical Oklahoma accent she said "Well, anywhere that someone else hasn't taken" at this point it was about 7 PM and I was thinking why did I even come here again. so I rushed over to a spot near the bathrooms and close to the lake. Did a quick nine point server to make sure the area was fine. Pitched my tent and then went back to Watonga for supper.
When I got back. someone else was running that section... so I just pulled over to tell them that I was there earlier and where my tent was. and he 'o you can't pitch a tent there that's an RV spot' At this point I was getting seriously Annoyed and I tried to explain the situation to the man. he said 'I don't care what any other fool told you move your tent' I just gave in and said fine moved my tent to a spot he deemed appropriate and got out my flashlight and started to read a newspaper the man said 'turn that light out' no lights after ten o'clock. I hastily turned out the light and tried to fall asleep. Which was near impossible for the spot he had moved to me was full of rocks and sticks. Sometime that night my tent moved roughly three feet downhill as well.
In the morning the man woke me up about 6 am shouting rents due I gave the man 30 dollars and said take the money and let me sleep. of course he said oh no if I wanted to stay past 8 am I would have to pay another 30 dollars now for the next night. I got up started to take down my tent had to go the restroom. never went though as soon I entered the door I could tell that it hadn't been cleaned in a month. I finished packing and left.
What was so bad about it? The service was terrible the people where rude the campground unkept areas flooded (no rain for a week either) bathrooms hadn't been cleaned in a month. about the only good thing about it is. It is the only place I know of that you can camp in a teepee my over all rate this camp a two. To summarize how I felt about this "It was like primitive camping in your backyard with all your neighbors watching"
However some say this is one of the best state parks in Oklahoma... I suppose that might be true if you want to stay in the resort and not the camp.
*Foul Language by the park staff has not been put in this opinion.
