Pros: This park is beautiful and the wildlife is friendly! Look out for curious deer.
Cons: The top of the park, where the picnic tables are, can be very crowded.
The Bottom Line: I love this park. It's huge and the scenery is lovely and best of all, it's seldom crowded! You'll notice the curious wildlife watching you.

If you're ever in east Tennessee, you must spend some time at Panther Creek State Park. I guarantee you will not look at your watch one time after you enter the park. No matter what time of day, or time of year, this park offer panoramic nature scenes that will have you literally holding your breath.
The park is quite large, over 1,400 acres. It is located on the Morristown side of Cherokee lake. Near Point Lookout, which is the highest point in the park, has an elevation that reaches about 1,460 feet above sea level.
The nature trails are well maintained and if you step off the path and explore on your own, you can see a variety of wildlife. During a Sunday that I spent at Panther Creek, I saw sparrows, bluejays, mockingbirds, squirrels, chipmonks, groundhogs, hawks, and lots of deer. The deer are not shy as long as you keep your distance, and they are everywhere.
I was once lucky enough to spy a doe taking her twin fawns down to the water for a drink. One of the little ones was scared and stuck close to it's mother, the other fawn began frolicking. It was amazing to see. This baby deer was bucking like a bronco and flicking it's tail. The mother watched this display and then snorted very loudly.
If you enjoy foliage, you will love the flora at Panther Creek. All the native trees grow there. The scent of sassafras and cedar scents the air and if you look down you can see a variety of wildflowers. If you are lucky enough to visit when the dogwoods are blooming, you will not soon forget the sight.
Come prepared to spend the entire day. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to hike and be sure to bring your camera. This park is so lovely that many weddings are performed here.
The park has offers camping, swimming, horseback riding, nature trails, fishing, and even has a nature observatory.
Panther Creek State Park is 6 miles west of Morristown and 40 miles northeast of Knoxville.
