It's mid-October, and once again the cooler Texas' weather causes me to think about travel. One of my favorite destinations in this great state is a place called Enchanted Rock.
I have been to Enchanted Rock several times since moving to Houston in 1984, and I must admit, it has been a different experience each time I've gone. First, I'd like to acquaint you with where this place is situated. It is about 18 miles north of Fredricksburg, Texas on ranch road 965. Fredricksburg is a quaint town about 45 minutes northwest of San Antonio, and is a place worth visiting even if you are not up for outdoor challenges of rock climbing. On one occasion, some of our group stayed in Fredicksburg, while the adventurous souls climbed the rock. There is a lot to see in this area, and I hope others will write about their experiences, but now I'd like to suggest a few tips for those who are interested in climbing the rock.
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is centered around a 500' granite dome, and is an interesting place for its geological and archaeological history. All that aside, it is a fun place to hike, and there are even camping facilities. One word of caution; I have heard that access is restricted during certain times of the year, and it would be wise to check with the Texas State Parks for camping reservations, or to check if they are restricting access during your planned visit.
My favorite visit to the park was on a November evening, just before sunset. It was wonderful to climb to the top of the rock, and to see the sunset over West Texas. The thermal breezes allow the birds to soar nearby, and one begins to experience why this area is called "Enchanted"
I have been to the rock during the summer, and it was just too hot for all the members of our group to make it to the top. I've heard that there are many wildflowers in bloom during the months of March, April, and May. I've not been during those months, but those who are interested in viewing the wildflowers of Texas, might consider waiting until that time of year.
You should consider bringing plenty of drinking water no matter what month you visit the park. If you plan on camping overnight then it would be wise to buy your groceries in Fredricksburg before driving the 18 miles to the park. As far as I know they still haven't built any grocery stores nearby. (Isn't that the beauty of it?)
Well, I hope you found this epinion informative. I hope you will search the internet for more information on Enchanted Rock, and the Texas hill country. It is not a place for everyone, but for those who like the outdoors this is a wonderful place to visit.
