A recent long weekend, June 1-4, found our family at Lake Brownwood State Park, ~15 miles North of Brownwood, Texas.
We arrived late on Friday hoping to wake up to great shade trees surrounding us. Unfortunately, the shade was practically non-existent, (only the ocassional trimmed up mesquite tree). However, I must say Willow Point proved to be a nice campground. Council Bluff looked to be a bit better shaded, but not as well positioned in terms of water play.
A designated swimming area was close-by within walking distance. My children loved the swimming area, with only one suggested improvement...more sand, and less grass. As a parent, I appreciated the gently sloping beach/swimming area. Lake Brownwood is one of the few Texas lakes with ample water. Excellent water skiing, fishing, etc. can be found on this huge expanse of water.
Shopping in nearby Brownwood proved nice, with a Walmart and countless other store in which to spend one's hard earned money.
The staff was very nice, with only 1 slightly aggressive park patrol (he kind of let the badge and rotating light go to his head every once in a while).
The park facilities were wonderful. I would highly recommend this for family reuninions, etc. as the group pavillion and adjoining cabins were very inviting.
