Pros: Beautiful scenery, easy access, cheap
fee, great sunsets, etc......
Cons: The somewhat scary drive into and out of
the Canyon.
The Bottom Line: We live about four hundred miles from Palo Duro, and the
drive is well worth it. If you live in, around, or are just
visiting Texas, you should see it.

We checked in at our hotel in Amarillo and headed south
to Palo Duro. The drive from Amarillo is about thirty minutes or so. It is also somewhat misleading in that the land around Palo Duro is so flat, it seems to go on forever and then,WOW!,there's the canyon.
The price is very right at, $ 3.00 for adults, $ 2.00 for seniors and FREE for kids 12 and under. When they take your money at the front, they aren'trude but they are robotic.
"Here's your ticket, keep it in the window, blah, blah, blah, move along". The first stop we came to was an overlook with a beautiful view of the canyon. It was
somewhat crowded when we first arrived but hang-around long enough and it thins out pretty quick. I recommend stopping at the gift shop, even if you don't want to buy anything, there is info about how and when the canyon was created, the animals there, past and present, and windows with spectacular views.
The real adventure is the descent into the canyon.
You drive down a twisting, turning little road that for
a small stretch, has a giant rock wall to your right,
and a sheer drop to your left. As someone who is acrophobic, i can honestly say the descent, and especially the " heart-pounding, hand-trembling ride back up are the worst parts of this magnificent place. I plan on going back and doing it again soon. During the summer months, they have a "world famous musical" called "Texas". I don't know to much about it since i only go in the spring, but if you want more info, here you go; http://www.texasmusicaldrama.
com. Also,http://www.palodurocanyon.com/.
They have all sorts of hiking trails from easy to difficult. They have many types of campsights including; primitive, equestrian, and RV. The pictures i saw on websites and in books before i came here do not do this place any justice. You must see this beautiful place in person. The sunsets here are some of the best. One evening, we climbed a high hill to watch the sunset and take
pictures. We were high enough we could see the entire canyon valley floor. We could here kids laughing and playing, and we could smell steaks grilling on the barbecue, all during a wonderful sunset. I love that place.
