| GirlMom's Full Review: Palo Duro Canyon State Park |
T E X A S! "A Musical Romance of Panhandle History" runs nightly throughout the summer months. I recently attended with a group from my church and we all left with a feeling of "Wow"! Ranging in age from 3 to approximately 55 years, it was a delightful show for all. On our returning bus ride, everyone was discussing their enthusiasm for the show.
TEXAS is a first rate OUTDOOR musical drama! Currently in its 35th season, it brings talent and enthusiasm to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Located just south of Amarillo, TX, the canyons provide a beautiful setting for this play.
Before the beginning of the show, we all attended an outdoors BBQ cookout, served by the local restaurant Cattle Call. Conveniently located at the entrance to the outdoor theatre, it was the perfect way to begin our western themed outing. There were picnic tables set up to view the colorful layers of the canyons. Our group enjoyed eating and allowing the kids to climb on the rocks (got rid of some of that energy!). The food was sausage and beef with side orders of beans and coleslaw. They also served peach cobbler! It was well worth the $22.00 for my family of four. Not only was it convenient, it was delicious!
After eating, we had a few minutes to spare and enjoyed the pre-show entertainment provided in the "outdoor lobby area". THE PRAIRIE DOGS (a local western group) sang original songs about the panhandle of Texas. The topics in their songs ranged from combine noise to Texas thunderstorms. They also entertained the kids by waving and singing to them directly!
Entering the outdoor amphitheatre, we were greeted by the friendliest "Customer Service Representatives". They had their Texas Howdy's down pat and greeted everyone with a big welcome! They also made sure that we knew that the theatre was equipped with a sound system for hearing impaired visitors. Every detail was taken care of.....from showing us to our seats to informing us of the "water only in the theatre" policy to their cute western skirts and shirts. It was obvious that they had great employee training.
Before the show starts, some of the customer service representatives come out and welcome the crowd. A small "chow call" triangle is given to the guest that traveled the farthest. The night we attended the winner was from Moscow! The representatives also led the crowd in producing a Texas thunderstorm with only their hands and feet. It was a great way to get started!
As the sun starts to set behind the walls of the canyons, two horses run along the top with riders carrying the American flag and the Texas flag. The crowd cheers wildly and the show begins! The excitement never stops until the end of the show! The story tells about the battle between a farmer and a rancher over the use of the land. Along with the main battle, there is lots of song and dance. The show was so entertaining and mesmerizing that the children in our group never moved! They sat quietly and took it all in, despite the late hour (it ended at 11:00 pm).
The songs and dance were performed extremely well. The costumes were colorful and eye-catching! I was impressed that such a quality performance was available so close to my small home town! It was a professionally done show with all the trimmings! The price for the show was under $60.00 for my family of four. During the performance, my husband leaned over and asked how much we spent on our tickets. I was surprised to hear his response be...."Wow! That's not very much for such a performance". It was THAT impressive to all of us in attendance!
In addition to all of the songs, dance, and acting, the sound effects and special effects were fantastic! At one point in the show, a Texas thunderstorm brews. The lights flash, and the thunder rolls, and with a loud crack, lightning strikes a tree on the side of the canyon. The whole scene was so realistic! Being outdoors, you almost forgot that it was part of the show!
In closing, TEXAS is a wonderful family show that you must attend if you are ever around Amarillo, Texas during the summer months. The show plays Monday thru Saturday from June 7 until August 19. They even have a website at www.TexasMusicalDrama.com for additional information.
