My family and I went camping last year in Palo Duro Canyon during the late summer. For the most part, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The temperature down in the canyon was much cooler than in Amarillo, and the variety of wildlife that made their way through our campsite (wild turkey, owls, raccoons, deer, just to name a few) kept the kids fascinated and maybe a bit on edge! The campsites were neat and VERY quiet due to the number of trees, and the toilet/shower facilities were kept clean and stocked.
We saw the musical "Texas" (an EXCELLENT production!) on an evening that featured REAL lightning and rain storms just prior to the show's opening act. This brings up a point I cannot stress enough: when you see the low water crossing signs that measure six feet or more, and yet the road is bone dry, don't be fooled. That rain storm I mentioned literally filled the crossings within minutes, and I still have red Panhandle mud in my van's engine compartment to testify as to how deep it can get!
For the money you will spend, a vacation in Palo Duro Canyon is very relaxing and quite a bargain. Don't miss the Panhandle Museum in the city of Canyon, located just outside the park - it has great displays of ranching and oil exploration in the Panhandle.
