| chaos315's Full Review: Natural Bridges National Monument |
This National Monument is one of my favorites. I have only been here once and then only for about two hours, but I still enjoyed it. I went to Natural Bridges in May 2000. The week before I had sprained my ankle really bad and was on crutches, yet I still enjoyed the small hikes to the overlooks including the unpaved trail to the Indian ruins overlook. The three bridge overlooks are paved and very short.
The one way loop is about 8 miles long and has several pullouts for scenic views of the canyons and bridges. There is parking near the trail heads. The small overlook trails are easy enough for everyone. On the hike to see the ruins I met a guy who had had a few knee surgeries and he said it just took a little longer to get there but he can still make it. Even me with my crutches took only three times as long on that trail as the rest of my group.
When I got to the overlook I looked through the binoculars and saw the ruins. I could see some hikers resting near them (the pamphlet warns against entering the ruins). Ever since that hike I wanted to hike the whole trail from Sipapu Bridge to Owachomo Bridge. That trail is about 4-6 miles long on an unpaved trail.
The Visitor Center should be the first stop at the monument. It has the information about the bridges, trails, and other attractions. The rangers are helpful and it is a good idea to fill water bottles before visiting the bridges. A quick visit should include the Sipapu and Owachomo Bridges.
