| jpluskota's Full Review: Elroy-Sparta State Trail |
My husband and his scouts take this bike trail every year. It is a total of 32 miles-- ONE WAY, he stresses. The trail includes 3 tunnels. His troop camps someplace about half way through the trail. It's a private campground right on the trail (Tunnel Trail Campground, State Highway 71, Wilton, WI 54670, phone--608-435-6829 [off season phone 920-294-3742). They also have bikes to rent, but his group usually brings their own. They camp here on a Friday night and Saturday they go one way and back. Lunch is taken with the group on the trail (sandwiches and such). They get back to the camp about 2 or 3 in the afternoon. This is always about 44 miles. Whoever wants to keep going, that group travels on to the other half and comes back, usually 6 or 7 pm. This means the older group, the more energetic group, come into camp after 64 miles of biking. Since this is an every year thing, there are quite a few who look forward to and do accomplish this ride.
Important note from my husband: Be sure to bring a flashlight. The tunnels are dark and you must walk your bike through the tunnels. The brochure says Tunnel #1 is 1 1/4 mile; Tunnel #2 is 2 1/4 mile; Tunnel #3 is 3 3/4 miles. Best time to go is August to October. The trail closes Oct. 31st but the campground was only open to mid-October.
