| scott_howell's Full Review: Coopers Rock State Forest |
Coopers Rock State Forest is one of the truly beautiful sights in the east. Located in the Appalachian Highlands just 10 miles north of Morgantown, West Virginia it is easily accessible from Interstate 68. The natural beauty of this forest will take your breath away from the moment you turn onto the tree draped entrance road. For over a mile you will drive along this road as glimpses of sunlight break through the leafy tunnel. There is ample parking at the end of this road and a few small souvenir and refreshment shops are there for your convenience. There are large, well built rustic pavilions for a picnic lunch, a group outing or just plain old relaxation. There are hiking trails in abundance that are well marked and extremely safe. You will be blessed by the occasional visit from a gray squirrel, rabbit or white tail deer. There are cabins that can be rented for overnight or longer. They are rustic yet comfortable. The grand attraction though is the "ROCK" from which the park gets it's name. A small wooden bridge leads you out to a natural 'balcony' rock formation. It is actually the top of a gigantic boulder. Measuring some 100 feet across and about 40 feet long it overlooks a 200+ foot drop into the scenic Cheat River landscape. Don't worry parents, there is a well built fence around the edge to prevent accidents. There are three observation glasses for viewing the scenery more closely. Over all this is one beautiful state forest. If you would like and added treat visit in October when the leaves are changing colors. The multitude of the hues in nature's pallet only adds to the charm of this natural wonder.
