Pros:easy to work with, subtly variegated color of "Licorice"
Cons:yarn could be a little softer, stretchy yarn may be hard to adjust to
The Bottom Line: Patons "Licorice" strech sock yarn created an attractive sock, and the yarn is easy to work with. I would just have liked the yarn to feel a little softer.
I recently loom knitted my first sock using Patons Stretch Socks yarn in Licorice.

Patons Stretch Socks yarn is a number 1, or super fine yarn. This yarn is described on the packaging as a “light weight cotton blend”. The shade Licorice is made of a blend of materials – cotton (41%), wool (39%), nylon (13%) and elastic (7%). I have typically worked with number 4 worsted weight or number 5 chunky yarn. Working with such fine yarn was new to me. In addition I haven’t used yarn that was so stretchy either.
The shade of Licorice is a variegated yarn. It contains a blend of black and greys with an overlay of a strand of white wrapping each color. One of the grey shades is so light it is almost white.
The washing instructions on the inside of the label instruct to hand wash gently. I read that with a sigh, as I dislike hand washing anything. If I had known this I may have passed up this yarn. When I do wash them, I will attempt at washing them on a gentle cycle. I have not yet completed the second sock, so I cannot yet say for how they wash.
This was my very first time loom knitting a sock on my AKB Sock Loom. Looming a sock and using a different type of yarn at the same time took some adjustment. The sock loom is a very fine gauge, and wrapping the pegs was at first a little difficult. I was also very concerned about the stretchiness of the yarn. I was worried that if I pulled the yarn too much, it would stretch. I was afraid that the yarn would be too tight to knit and that there would be tight sections of the sock. Eventually I got into a groove with the yarn. It slides very easily through my fingers as I knit. I came to realize that I didn’t need to be too concerned about the yarn stretching as I worked with it. Since the loom is such a fine gauge, I was only using a tiny bit of yarn for each stitch. I think when I may have pulled hard it bounced back into place.
The variegated yarn makes a nice look in a sock. It ends up attractive, neutral blend of colors. Since it is variegated, there is no specific pattern to the colors. The black, grey and white shades move back and forth with subtlety. The sock feels thin and light weight between my fingers, but it is not as soft as I would have hoped for. Once on my foot it feels pretty nice. I did make a couple mistakes while making the sock in the area of the heel, but it still is comfortable and stretchy. It fits quite snugly around my toes, however I think that is more the results of looming error rather than the yarn. I like the feel of the sock, and while it does not feel harsh, I only wish it were a bit softer against the skin.
This skein of Patons Stretch Socks yarn has 239 yards of yarn. In looking over some loomed sock patterns, the required amount of yarn ranges from anywhere from 220 yards to over 300 yards. The yardage range of course depends on the pattern. I would suggest having an idea of what pattern you will be using and be sure to purchase enough for your pattern because this yarn does have a dye lot.
