Pros: Ultra fast sequential read/write speed, fast for small files, 64GB, robust, shock resistant, USB 3.0.
Cons: Too wide, no LED, not cap-less design.
I recently bought the Patriot Super Sonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive because I needed a fast USB 3.0 (and USB 2.0 compatible) flash drive that also had a large capacity (64GB). I am frequently copying large data bases between computers and USB 3.0 ports are becoming increasingly common. The Patriot Super Sonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive is rated at up to 200MB/s for the sequential read speed and 120MB/s for the sequential write speed, which is astounding. I cannot find anything faster on the internet. I should add that I have learned to stay away from unrated USB flash drives. There is a reason they don’t advertise the speed ratings.
I should say that the interface type is not listed under this listing but it is USB 3.0 (checked the model number & picture).
The Patriot Super Sonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Read and Write Speed
I have a lot of USB 2.0 flash drives with read/write speeds in the range from under 1MB/s to 20MB/s. There are some fast USB 2.0 flash drives that have a read and write speed above 20MB/s. However, the maximum theoretical USB 2.0 transfer speed is 60MB/s and in practice it is around 30MB/s. Therefore, USB 2.0 flash drives have an upper limitation. With USB 3.0 ports becoming increasingly common, USB 2.0 flash drives are starting to become obsolete. We saw the same thing happen with USB 1.0/1.1 flash drives some years ago.
USB 3.0 allows for much faster data transfer rates but there are other limiting factors like the read and write speed of the USB drive, the read and write speed of the device that you are transferring to and from, whether you have memory caching turned on/off, etc. Using Chrystal Disk Mark I measured the following when connecting the Patriot SuperSonic Magnum 64GB USB3.0 Flash Driveto the USB 3.0 port on my Asus K53T laptop.
Sequential Read Speed (1GB blocks): 198.3 MB/s
Sequential Write Speed (1GB blocks): 145.1 MB/s
Using Chrystal Disk Mark I measured the following when connecting the Patriot SuperSonic Magnum 64GB USB3.0 Flash Driveto the USB 2.0 port on my Asus K53T laptop.
Sequential Read Speed (1GB blocks): 32.51 MB/s
Sequential Write Speed (1GB blocks): 31.69 MB/s
It appears that these measurements actually exceed the stated ratings, at least for the write-speed. Typically it is the other way around. Since I cannot find a flash drive rated higher (as of today) this might be the fastest USB flash drive there is. I can add that copying 1.2GB of several thousand small files took three minutes, so it also seems to perform well with multiple small files.
Look & Design of the Patriot Super Sonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive
The Patriot Super Sonic Magnum 64GB USB3.0 Flash Drive is black with light blue edges and ends. It is pretty stylish looking but it has a little bit of a plastic look to it. However, this is deceiving as the enclosure is made from aluminum and even the cap is mostly aluminum. It is very hard and robust. A clear positive is the large robust opening/handle for the lanyard in the back. A negative is that it has no activity LED.
The thickness and the length of this flash drive seem to be fairly typical. It is maybe a little bit longer. However, it is almost 50% as wide as most USB flash drives. This is an inconvenience since it may block adjacent USB ports, just like SUV’s often take up two parking spaces. The dimensions are 3.1 x 1.1 x 0.3 inch or 78.74 x 27.94 x 7.62 mm. It has a large cap that can be attached to the end of the flash drive. This is a little bit better than some flash drives but still not as good as cap-less designs in my opinion. It weighs 0.785 ounce or 21.9 grams and is therefore a little bit on the heavy side.
Other Features of the Patriot Super Sonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive
The Patriot Super Sonic Magnum 64GB USB3.0 Flash Driveis also compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 and it is pre formatted as FAT32. With Windows 7 and Windows XP I get nearly the promised 64GB capacity (that does not always happen). It is shock resistant and is rated at 15G. It also feels hard and robust. It uses so called Patriot 8-Channel technology and a native USB 3.0 flash memory controller to achieve the high read and write speeds. It does not come with any bonus software, which in my opinion (and experience) is not a loss. It comes with a five year warranty.
Summary and Discussion
If I am transferring an 18GB data base at a rate of 100MB/s it takes roughly three minutes, but if I do it at 2MB/s it takes roughly two and a half hours. The speed matters. Naturally it is also neat if the capacity is large enough to hold 18GB, or I’ll have to split it up. It is also good if the flash drive is robust so I don’t lose the data, or accidentally ruin the flash drive. There are many other features one can appreciate as well. For sensitive confidential data features like password protection, hardware encryption, included active anti-malware, etc, are important. However, the Write-Speed and the Read-Speed are very important features of a flash drive in my opinion. It was what I was looking for in this case.
I am in the process of collecting all my old USB 2.0 flash drives and I am planning to throw most of them in the trash. There are a few USB 2.0 flash drives with high capacity and decent read/write speeds (around the 20MB/s) that I will keep. I would certainly not say no to a USB 2.0 Iron-Key, which comes with so many useful features for protecting data. However, it is time for the other USB 2.0 flash drives to go as the march of progress has turned them into junk.
This flash drive has its negatives, it is too wide, no LED, basic cap design, etc. However, it is also robust and hard, shock resistant, it has a great lanyard opening, and above all it is very fast, perhaps the fastest USB drive out there (at this point). 64GB is also a good enough capacity for me. I feel five stars is an appropriate rating for this USB flash drive.
