I bought the 2006 Ford Fusion about a week ago. I wanted something that looked a little sporty but I also wanted something that was comfortable. My husband is 6 foot and is quiet comfortable in it. He even road in the back just to see what it would be like for passenger and there was lots of room. I picked the car up on Thursday and found out I had to make a 1400 mile trip the next day. My husband and I thought well no better time than the present than to break in a new car. I bought the SEL model with V-6 engine and 200 hp, the trip we took, took us through the mountains. Going up hill the Fusion had no problem holding highway speeds. Even passing on a steep hill it had plenty of get up and go. The ride is quiet comfortable and very quiet. But then I was used to driving a mini van so I noticed a major difference in road noise. The electric seat is a must if you have to share your car or anyone else drives it as you have to change all the settings if there is much difference in height. I was impressed with the way it held the road at no time did I ever feel I didnt have full control of the car even during a heavy rain storm. Overall I'm pretty happy with it.
Now for the down falls. The turn signal is hard to reach, if you have short fingers you would have to take your hand off the steering wheel in order to reach it, and since the high beams and windshield washer controls are there that can become annoying. The main problem with I see with the fusion is Ford has given it enough power to have fun. I was passing and hit 85 before I knew it. It's very easy to speed in this car. It loves to go! The mileage really wasn't bad for a brand new engine. We averaged 29 mpg on the trip. My one suggestion would be Ford needs to add Electronic Steering Control to this. When you are at highway speeds if you aren't careful you will over correct. The steering just isn't as crisp as it should be. My other complaint is the rear window is too small if you are backing up a on even a slight incline you have to depend completely on your side mirrors as you can't see what is behind you. Another minor annoyance is the controls for the temperature and fan, if you hold the steering wheel low you will change the temperature in the car. My husband and I both did this a couple of times. It started getting warmer before we realized what we did. Personally I dont like it there. You still have the manual control but the steering wheel one needs to be changed.
Overall Ford has made a good attempt at mixing comfort with sport; however there are still a few bugs to be worked out.
