Pros: Fast, reliable, inexpensive, and it beats the heck out of Pentium 4!
Cons: CPU temperature is very high, so you need a big CPU fan.
The Bottom Line: This is perfect for gamers, video editors or whatever you do with computers. Athlon is reliable, fast and inexpensive.

I recently purchased an AMD Athlon 1.13 Ghz processor for $117.00, an ASUS A7A266 motherboard and a Thermaltake Volcano II fan. I hooked it up, installed Windows 98SE and without overclocking at all it came up at 1395 Mhz! I have also have looked at a clock speeds for Pentium 4 and this beats a P4 1.4 Ghz in a race of speed. I highly recommend getting an AMD Athlon processor its worth every penny of your money and its very compatable. I have an SBLive! with a 3D Prophet II MX 64Mb video card and have found no incompatabilities with any hardware of software.
My only concern is the temperature. My CPU runs at an average of 120 F and that seems like a risk of overheating to me. If you are considering purchasing one i recommend going so AMD's website (http://www.amd.com/) and looking at their recommendations on power supplies, case/CPU fans and motherboards. Then do some looking of your own go to major motherboard manufacturers websites like Gigabyte (http://www1.giga-byte.com/index.html), ASUS (http://www.asus.com/index.html) or Tyan (http://www.tyan.com/). At these sights you can look at the specifics on motherboards to find one to suit your needs.
Also with AMD's CPUs you have the advantage of DDR memory. This is an advantage because it pushes your overall computer speed and its much faster than Intel's RDRAM. So, soon Intel will be switching to DDR as well.
To give you an idea of how fast these processors are I loaded Windows 98SE at 398Mb on an empty hard drive in about 20 minutes including installation, drive formating, hardware setup and everything!
