| ChristineDale's Full Review: Absolut Mandrin Vodka |
There was a point at which my liquor reviews were all leaning toward orange-infused spirits. I was accused by NFP of having an orange fetish (grin). Though I staunchly deny any such prejudice, I feel compelled to inform the world about the latest item in my epicurean repertoire...Absolut Mandrin.
What is Absolut Mandrin?
Several Vodka distilleries produce wonderful flavored vodkas in addition to the classic spirit. Many vodkas are flavored with fruits like citrus and orange.
Absolut, in its quest to offer a rainbow of flavors, as it were, produces Mandrin (orange) , Kurant (currant), Citron (lemon/lime), and even Peppar (pepper).
Absolut Mandrin is a citrus flavored vodka which showcases mandrin and strong orange flavors backed by other citrus for punch and a “hint of sweetness”. Absolut Mandrin is completely clear, and 80 proof (40% alcohol). It seems to be fairly available at most larger bars such as Fridays, and can be found at any decent liquor store. (I was recently at a liquor store in Kentucky that only carried Wild Turkey and a range of domestic beers, but that’s another story).
Why I Love Absolut Mandrin
First of all, you can’t go wrong with Absolut. The fine Swedish vodka is made by a process called continuous distillation from winter wheat and clear spring water. (For more info, you can read my opinion Swede Surrender).
There is nothing as fresh and happy as the taste of orange! Absolut Mandrin offers a clear citrus zing to a nicely made vodka. The orange flavor is strong but not overwhelming and offers a candy-like sweetness without making your lips pucker. It is refreshing and a change from the ordinary, as it is both light and fruity.
Who Should Buy Absolut Mandrin?
If you’re “building” a bar, this is certainly a later addition. But if you like to just keep a bottle or two in the house should the occasion arise, I’d say you might seriously consider Absolut Mandrin. It seems fairly versatile, but more importantly is fantastic with tonic or juices.
If you are a vodka drinker, try this one straight from the freezer or in your favorite drink recipe for a nice change of pace.
What Can I Do With Absolut Mandrin?
This is great with bar snacks - artichoke dip, nachos, etc. It would be great paired with shrimp and seafood, but probably also with dark meats like duck which enjoy fruity pairings. Most of all, Absolut Mandrin is suitable before or after dinner.
I have a couple of recipes to share, but my very favorite advice: Stir over ice with tonic and a slice of orange or wedge of lime for a great de-stresser after a hard day!
You can find the following recipes and more information at www.absolut.com or just make up your own concoctions:
Absolut Mandolito
3 parts Mandrin
2 parts lemon juice
1 part sugar syrup
dash of blue curacao
*** shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass. Top with dash Blue Curacao.
Mandrin Blossom
3 parts Mandrin
1 part strawberry syrup
2 parts orange juice

*** shake with ice and strin. Fill with soda and garnish with a strawberry
Don’t be afraid to add a little sunshine to your day. Shaken or stirred, Absolut Mandrin is a delight to the senses!
