saveth's Full Review: Absolut Vodka Citron - 1 liter
My first tasting of Absolut Citron occurred about three years ago, and since then, I have come to appreciate and to have a great liking for it. I have drunk it straight, with orange juice, with tonic, and in several other tasty combinations.
Since they are Swedish, all Absolut vodkas tend to have a taste that is drier than that of Russian vodkas. This has to do, among other less significant things, with the climate in which the organic material that makes the ethyl alcohol is grown. Some vodkas from other countries are made from sugars (generally generic sucrose) or potatoes. Russian vodkas and other Eastern European vodkas, for example, tend to be made from potatoes. Less expensive vodkas are generally made from sugar. Absolut vodkas, on the other hand, are made from grain.
The citrus flavor associated with Absolut Citron is derived from fruits containing citric acid. The most prominent citrus taste in the vodka is that of the lemon. Also noticeable are more sour fruits such as the lime and a few more neutral fruits such as the orange. Because of the citrus flavor, Absolut Citron will combine nicely with most any kind of fruit. My personal favorites are kiwi and papaya. Although these are tropical fruits, they still seem to blend in nicely with the almost pungent taste of vodka. I believe Absolut's citrus taste provides a new twist on vodka drinking in that Absolut Citron is a tangy alternative to regular vodka.
Absolut Citron exudes a smell and a taste I have never before experienced. When wafting the vodka, my nose tingles with the sourness exerted by the more acidic flavors such as lemon and, more significantly, lime. I also smell the vodka, which is most obviously derived from a grain source. Grain vodka is more pungent than either potato or sugar vodka and thus, when inhaled in great amounts, definitely has the ability to bring a tear to my eye. The taste is even more unique than the smell, in my opinion. When I drink it slowly, it seems to flow down my throat and allows me almost no perception that it is moving. It is smooth and soft and provides a comfortable feeling in my throat. However, when taken as a shot, it tends to temporarily inhibit breathing. Although it is smooth when taken slowly, it can be quite harsh when taken quickly. Because of this, a soft beverage (preferably a fruit juice) would be my choice for a chaser. In my experience, cranberry juice has worked well.
The combination of grain vodka and citrus that is used to make Absolut Citron provides an easygoing, fun medium for any situation ranging from casual drinking to parties. I have come to find out that many people enjoy the change from regular vodka to citrus vodka and that, after drinking a concoction containing Absolut Citron, will become compelled to purchase their own bottle. Overall, Absolut Citron is a happy medium between the cheap vodkas and the extremely expensive vodkas. The taste is impeccable, and the ease of drinking it is almost unmatched.
