Pros: Cheap price. Excellent quick reading. (When it worked that is)
Cons: Extremely poor design / construction. Faulty drive
The Bottom Line: Stay away from these drives, 2 drives, both faulty. Older Acers ran better than this one.

| ahsun19's Full Review: Acer CD 650P (650P-041) Internal 50x CD-ROM Drive |
When I first bought the drive for $45 (Cdn) I thought it was a good deal. I was purchasing it to replace the old 40x Acer I was using flawlessly for over 2 years until I accidentally broke it... my bad :P
But when I installed this 50x CD-ROM, I immediately had problems. The tray would not open. Needless to say this renders the drive useless, the tray would open about 3/4 of an inch and jam. I would blame this on poor physical design. (which brings me to the point, is that flimsy flip down flap really neccessary? why hasn't Acer switched to the more traditional old fashioned full tray?). Upon returning it (day after purchasing it) I received a new replacement, tested on site and opened and seemed to work fine. I've had it now for just under a week now with no problems but then another problem has now arisen. The CD-ROM no longer reads any CD (data, music, CD-R etc..).
It seems the drive no longer spins up properly for some reason. I've tried replacing the Bus cable etc... but it's no use, the drive is broken, in less than a week of moderate use.
I must say I'm greatly disappointed with this CD-ROM drive and am extremely reluctant to purchase another Acer product in the future for fear of any other hardware quality issues.
