| sxejustin's Full Review: Acer CD 650P (650P-041) Internal 50x CD-ROM Drive |
When my old 40x CD ROM conked out, I went with father to the big computer expo down in King of Prussia, where we picked out the Acer.
We bought it because it's cheap, and it's a brand name. The last one we had was from like "Snowball Electronics", a company who went out of business soon after our CD ROM stopped working.
So, we bought it, brought it home, and installed. I was impressed. It worked great, GTA 2 never went so fast. I had a great time with it, playing various games the way I like to and such, until one day...
IT HAPPENED.
Icy chills went down my spine and the feeling of Deja Vu was unmistakeable. I put a CD in, and nothing happened. I went to Windows Explorer, and it showed there to be NOTHING IN THE CD ROM DRIVE.
Ahh!!! Now, the thing works sporadically. I've had it for like six months at this point and it works fine maybe half the time, but the rest of the time I have to put the CD in and take it out about three times before it works. Usually it ends up crashing the computer.
Sometimes when I'm playing games with it it will tend to suddenly stop recognizing the game in there, and act like nothing was ever there. It does this with the Sims a lot.
The thing refuses to play any of the demo discs that come with PC Gamer magazine, which really ticks me off. I want to play the Hitman Demo, dammit!
Anyway, the thing was cheap and worked well for awhile, but this thing is just too unreliable in the long run to get me to recommend it. Go with something else, espescially if you intend on using it a lot like I did.
