drdevience's Full Review: Age of Mythology: The Titans for Windows
After falling completely in love with Age of Empires 2 and it's Expansion Pack, Age of Conquerors, I was then somewhat disillusioned with Age of Mythology. This expansion, The Titans, helped that quite a bit.
So what's new here. You get 12 new God powers, 15 new human units, and 10 new myth units... but the main thing that I liked is the 1 new mythology, The Atlaneans. I love them! The villagers here have there own donkeys which are gathering points so you don't have to build those separate. This makes things go much faster as far as resources go.
The Atlanteans also have some cool new powers. You can put a villager to work digging up a titan that is just flat awesome. This bad boy is huge and just goes around wreaking havoc in the enemy villages and he's damn near indestructable.
Atlantean soldiers can be turned into heroes, and you gain favor with this temple by holding settlements. One glitch I've found with this mythlogy though is that normally you can build X amount of manors (houses) per settlement... well, once your manor option blacks out, you can't build any more even if you capture and build more fortified settlements. This just came out recently though so I"m sure there will be a patch soon for that. So far, it hasn't been a major deal for me.
You also get one new single player campaign called Titan Campaign that I didn't much care for.. but then I don't care for campaigns in general anyway. I'm pretty sure that King of the Hill and Sudden Death are new scenarios.. I don't remember them being there before I loaded in this expansion.
Some of the new powers are the ability to move your entire army to a specified location, or even relocate one of your buildings to anywhere within your line of sight. I love that too.. saves having to keep building your barracks and stables closer to the fighting.. now I can just move them.
The new Gods all fall under the Atlantean Pantheon and include Gaia, Kronos, and Oranos. Gaia is pretty cool. With her, all your buildings are surrounded by lush growth, and you can make a lush forest where you please which prevents enemies from building anything near it. She also has building regeneration, which is a nice attribute.
Kronos has cheaper siege weapons and myth units, and it is him who allows you to time shift those buildings. Oranos grants you line of site to all settlements on the map, and the sky passage ability to move your troops en masse.
So, is the Titans worth buying? Sure it is. Even though every new thing is tied to the Atlantean addition, which means really they just added one thing, it's worth it. The Atlanteans are just very cool and are worth the price of the expansion. They make this game much more interesting.
I don't think I'll stay as enrapt with this as with Empires and it's expansion, but it's still a solid 4 star game and worth owning.
